The Selection Process

SELECTION PROCESS

1.  Students may participate in the CAP Case Study Competition through three processes: practitioner pairing, academic sponsorship, and independent submission.

a.  Practitioner Pairing: Students interested in selecting a case study topic in partnership with a practitioner organization or agency are asked to submit a one-page Student Interest Form by October 15th (click on:Student Interest Form – CAP Case Study ).  Interest Forms must include students’ academic affiliation, policy areas of interest, time availability, and location. The selection of a particular author by a practitioner agency or organization will be entirely a decision of the practitioner, based on an evaluation of the quality and the appropriateness of the proposals received. If applicable, a student may submit the name and contact information for an agency or organization with which the student has already discussed the case study and wishes to complete the case study in partnership with. The CAP Student Interest Form is accessible here (need insert link to download). All forms should be submitted to CAPcasestudy@gmail.com, and a representative from the practitioner organization, if applicable, should be copied on this e-mail. Feedback on proposals will be provided to authors by October 30th.th Practitioners will independently contact students if selected for a case study partnership.  Organizations that are interested in being paired with a student to work on a study should complete the Organization Interest Form (click on: Organization Interest Form – CAP Case Study).

b.  Academic Sponsorship: If a student wishes to participate via academic sponsorship, he or she should submit a proposal and final case study in consultation with her or his professor or affiliated institution. Professors and institutions may nominate one or more case studies for recognition by CAP, and should nominate all student applicants by November 30th. One-page proposals including the name of the student, affiliated academic institution and sponsor, practitioner organization or agency of study, and topic of the case study should be submitted along with nominations in one email to CAPcasestudy@gmail.com.

c.  Independent Submission: Independent authors (those meeting the eligibility criteria but not in a performance management course or in partnership with a practitioner organization or agency) may submit case studies directly to CAPcasestudy@gmail.com. These authors are encouraged to submit proposals by November 30th.

The CAP Case Study Committee, composed of members of the CAP Board, will undertake a review of the case studies submitted each year and select the top three to four case studies. Student case studies selected will be provided the opportunity to present at the Annual Conference of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA). Students whose case studies are selected for presentation at the annual ASPA Conference will be contacted by January 15th. CAP will provide a portion of the travel and registration costs, and will make the awards to Graduate Students at the conference. CAP will also encourage and recognize practitioners (including agency and organization hosts) who wish to attend the conference and add comments about particular case studies.

Selected case studies will also be made available via the CAP website for classroom use and training purposes, as a way to improve the practice.

All final case study submissions must be submitted no later than December 15th to CAPcasestudy@gmail.com. Case studies become the property of CAP, and if selected, may be published on the CAP Website.
